When I was a kid in the fifties Maine Coons were considered extinct. Fast forward twenty years, I was living on the East Coast and had a cool job traveling and meeting all sorts of interesting people. One of them had a Maine Coon. He was big and beautiful and was lying on the back of an overstuffed chair casually watching us with his amazing eyes, calm and intelligent, until he decided that we were boring then he jumped down with a thud and ambled over to his food then off into the bedroom.
He was like a little lion with a furry mane and ruff, and a tail that moved like a snake covered in boa feathers, sitting on the back of a chair in an apartment outside of Philadelphia. I fell in love!
I didn’t know much about cats in general, just the occasional barn cat up in the hayloft on the horse farm. My family bred horses and dogs. In fact my mother disliked cats because she didn’t know what they were thinking, she liked kids who didn’t lie and dogs that obeyed. But I knew I wanted that cat and started my quest to find one.
Enter my first little cat and my first rescue. She was part Abyssinian and was a strapping little runt of the litter. She could do the most unexpected things, like jump straight up to the top of 6 foot bookcases like it was nothing and sit there like a statue for hours on end. She was fearless and protective.
She was my Manhattan cat. I adored her and was hooked on exotic cats from then on.
Another fast forward, this time 30 years. I find myself a widow, living in a giant historic mansion Canton Ohio, that was unsellable. The Mansion was beautiful but Canton was a disaster! I was running a resale business to sell all my stuff and renting out the mansion on Airbnb while living in the studio.
The last of my rescue cats had recently died of old age, and my first Airbnb guest nicely pointed out my rodent problem. Duh. So the dream of a Maine Coon was resurrected and the quest began! This time with search engines! If I was going to get a cat, I was determined to find a Maine Coon.
There was only one kitten and no cats anywhere, except for Freya. Little face with turquoise eyes. I was smitten! I didn’t know at the time but I was one of 200 people who expressed interest. And, she was expensive! But I really wanted her and the breeder and I made a connection. I wanted to do what she was doing.
All my girls come from the same Cattery and they are all half sisters. So after Freya came Astrid and then Rune. They were all dark so I wanted a light Tom and I found Thor in Chicago. A giant cuddly Golden Maine Coon. Perfect!
So the adventure begins and I hope you join us . . .
